Orlando: passion, magic, madness – and one of Handel’s richest and most inventive operatic scores, built around a starring role conceived for the dazzling castrato Senesino. The anarchic iconography of the punk movement inspired this colourful 2013 staging at Vienna’s Kammeroper by the young Italian director Stefania Panighini.
The singers – all members of the Young Ensemble of the celebrated Theater an der Wien – are now making names for themselves at other major opera houses around the world. Conductor Rubén Dubrovsky – here in charge of the ensemble he founded, Bach Consort Wien – has established a particular reputation in Baroque opera and in 2015 appeared at the Handel Festival in the composer’s birthplace, Halle.
